America’s First
Non-Ultra-Processed Verified Cooking Oil
The Non-UPF Verified program identifies foods produced without harsh industrial processing and made from minimally processed ingredients. Ultra-processed foods make up a majority of the modern diet, but Simply Sunflower is made without ultra-processing and without ultra-processed ingredients. A cooking oil you can trust.
The First Ever Non-UPF Cooking Oil
Simply Sunflower Oil was named America’s FIRST cooking oil to be non-UPF verified and was also recognized at Natural Product’s Expo West as one of the first 100 products to be verified under the new Non-UPF Certification standard. This new verification launched by the Non-GMO Project helps consumers easily identify minimally processed foods made with real ingredients.
Why it matters
70% of Americans are seeking non-ultra-processed foods. However, ultra-processed foods make up over 50% of total daily calorie intake in Western countries. The Non-UPF Verified program is designed to help consumers more easily identify foods made with simple ingredients and traditional methods.
The Non-UPF verification highlights the process we have followed all along with cold-pressing our nutrient-dense sunflower seeds to extract oil naturally, without chemical refining. Most other cooking oils are highly refined and cannot meet the high standards of Non-UPF verification. We are grateful to offer something unique that retains the nutrient-density and vitamins in its natural state. Simply Sunflower Oil is free of additives, free of chemicals, and full of nutrients!

Non-UPFs are foods that are made from minimally processed ingredients without harsh processing. Think natural, not-heavily processed foods - the way nature intended it to be!
Ultraprocessing typically breaks foods down and recombines them using industrial methods. This process often includes additives and industrial ingredients. In the cooking oil category, most seed oils are highly refined, ultra-processed, bleached, and deodorized resulting in a colorless, flavorless product lacking in nutrients.
This is why Simply Sunflower Oil is unique!! We do not process our oil like most seed oils. We stay true to our brand: SIMPLY Sunflower Oil.
UPFs make up over 50% of total daily calorie intake in Western countries. Some UPFs are obvious but others are not. The Non-UPF Verified program is here to help consumers easily recognize non-ultra processed foods.

Diet is considered the leading cause of death worldwide, with UPFs as a primary driver. UPFs have been linked to the most common sever diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Beyond these, UPFs can disrupt hormones, worsen sleep quality, compromise the immune system, and cause inflammation in the body.
There is a clear link between diet quality and mental health. Multiple studies have shown that people who eat primarily whole foods have a 25-35% lower risk of depression than those consuming mostly ultra-processed foods.
Whole foods provide essential nutrients needed for proper brain function. UPFs can disrupt key pathways affecting our mood regulation, stress response, and cognitive function.
Whole foods ensure our body functions properly with a lower risk of health issues.

Not all the time! While some UPFs are obvious – like soft drinks or instant noodles – others masquerade as healthy choices. In Western countries, UPFs now make up over 50% of total daily calorie intake.
Many products marketed as healthy are among the most highly processed foods available. Plant-based meat alternatives, protein bars, breakfast cereals and "low-fat" or "sugar-free" products often contain numerous industrial ingredients. Even products labeled "natural" can be ultraprocessed. Marketing terms like "whole grain," "all natural" or "no artificial flavors" don't tell the whole story about how processed a food really is.
The Non-UPF Verified program considers the extent and intensity of processing — information that isn't apparent from product packaging alone. This program helps consumers easily identify Non-UPFs and make more informed purchasing decisions.

When Big Tobacco bought up food companies in the 1980s, they applied their expertise in creating irresistible products. The result? Foods precisely designed to trigger dopamine responses similar to addictive drugs, using exact combinations of sugar, salt, and fat that maximize cravings.
These foods break down and absorb so quickly that your body's "full" signals can't keep up, while industrial additives are specifically designed to keep you coming back for more. Over time, the application and purpose of ultraprocessing has evolved and expanded. In the rapidly evolving food landscape, there is a need to bring more clarity to what exactly is and isn’t ultraprocessed.
-
According to the Non-UPF Verification program, start by focusing on whole, minimally processed foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes when possible. When buying packaged foods, read ingredient lists carefully – if they're long or contain unfamiliar industrial ingredients, it's likely ultraprocessed.
In today's busy world, most of us need convenient food options – and that's okay. Start where you can: replace the most obvious UPFs in your diet with minimally processed alternatives. When time allows, prepare simple meals from basic ingredients. When you need convenience foods (and we all do), look for products with ingredients you recognize. Every small change matters, and you shouldn't feel guilty about needing practical solutions for your real life.

UPFs can impair the very brain functions we need to make healthy choices, creating a destructive cycle. But this works in reverse too: reducing UPF consumption improves mood stability, mental clarity, and impulse control. Studies show even small reductions in UPFs can lead to measurable improvements in decision-making capacity within weeks. Better food enables better choices, creating an upward spiral of wellbeing.
